Project Statement

Sandscapes is more than a generative artwork. It is a time-based meditation: a contemplative, ever-changing simulation that draws its breath from code and settles its form through physics.

The project simulates the timeless ritual of sand falling through glass, inspired by kinetic sandscape frames whose sand slips between air bubbles and gravity to form miniature deserts and alien horizons.

Sandscapes is not merely a visual project. It is a meditation on permanence through impermanence: a tribute to the moment before completion, and to the ancient truth that all things fall, and all things, in falling, find form.

Technical Notes

At the heart of Sandscapes is a dynamic, physics-inspired simulation rendered with p5.js and governed by deterministic randomness from each token hash. The script recreates falling sand, rising bubbles, and eventual inversion: the core behaviors of classic sand art devices.

Each work begins from a token-derived seed that initializes a custom pseudo-random generator. Sand grains are layered in colored stripes, then shuffled through a granular physics loop where gravity, entropy, clumping, and bubble obstacles shape the image over time.

When enough sand settles, the canvas flips vertically, allowing the work to loop without resolving into stillness. The palettes are algorithmically generated, and no textures, filters, or pre-rendered visuals are used.
